Multi-ethnical, multi-denominational and multi-religious social coexistence

Long before the wars of the 1990s in former Yugoslavia, conflicts of nationality have been a structural problem of all South-Eastern-European countries. Rather typical for the region is that ethnical, denominational and religious groups overlap and intermingle closely. The adoption of a national identity along the lines of European examples since the 19th century has shaped the ethnical and religious diversity considerably. Recent developments have proven that democracy alone cannot reduce the political tension on a national level.
The crucial question of the dissertations dealing with these issues is one of role models and of shaping multi-ethnical ,multi-denominational and multi-religious coexistence. Simultaneously the significance of national, cultural and/or religious prejudices and stereotypes as the most common disruptive influence will be scrutinized.

A central focus will be laid on the relation between western role models and independent traditions as well as on the tension and potential which arise from various historical, theological and natural phenomena of ethnical, denominational and religious plurality.
